IMEC (Belgium)

The Belgian partner IMEC is a leading independent research centre in the field of microelectronics, nanotechnology, enabling design methods and technologies for ICT systems. Today, IMEC has a staff of more than 1500 people, including 500 guest researchers and industrial residents.

IMEC performs scientific research that runs 3 to 10 years ahead of industrial needs. Its balance between basic and application oriented research and its well-developed intellectual property rights policy form an attractive base for world-wide industrial collaborations. IMEC’s most important scientific activities are concentrated on the development of new process technologies for the next generation of chips, micro-systems, sensors, molecular nano-technology, advanced packaging, flip chip interconnection technology, and the development and application of novel high-level design methodologies, with a special focus on telecommunications and multimedia applications.

IMEC’s infrastructure involves state of the art fabrication and metrology tools, including a fully equipped 200 mm processing facility (used for the development of deep submicron CMOS, analogue and BiCMOS technologies and non-volatile memories) and a recently qualified 300 mm processing facility for which the installation of back-end-of-line processing tools is ongoing. Presently, the development towards the 32 nm technology node is ongoing. At the research level the process development is aiming at 22 and 16 nm devices.
